The theme for the 2026 Formosa North Coast Art Festival is "Oceanic Carols: A Dance of Light and Fire," continuing an exploration of the profound relationship between art and the natural environment that began in 2023. As this year coincides with the Year of the Fire Horse in the lunar calendar, the curatorial lens extends from the coastline toward the hinterlands, focusing on "fire," "light," and "resonant frequencies." The project seeks to reinterpret the North Coast—where mountains meet the sea—as a gravitating musical instrument and a boundless playground.
The key visual adopts a minimalist, abstract language to echo the curatorial theme, transforming the natural landscape into a rhythmic visual score. At the center, blue-green color blocks weave horizontally and vertically, symbolizing the five vital arteries of the land: the Balian, Laomei, Jinbaoli, Yuantan, and Masu Creeks. These are not merely geographical markers; they serve as conduits through which energy flows, drawing the viewer from the shore into the interior to witness the hidden pulse within the North Coast's topography.
